Baby Car Seat Covers, Toys, and other Accessories

You want your baby to be secure while traveling. But does safety have to mean boredom? A fussy baby can make for a very trying trip. Keep your child happy with accessories that attach to the car seat and can't slip away from Baby's hands. Go for Variety Some snap-on car seat accessories can be purchased individually; others come in sets designed to keep your baby both occupied and learning while she is in her car seat. Even for short trips, switch things around to keep her interested. A toy you put away now will look brand-new to her a month from now. Very young babies will benefit from toys that stand up on or suspend from part of the car seat. These move on their own with the movement of your car and capture Baby's interest. As she grows, she will begin patting at, pulling, and probably nibbling on her car seat toys. Be sure to purchase toys that will stand up to a toddler's hands-on curiosity. As she grows, your baby will enjoy items that react when she touches them. Toys that squeak, chime, or play a song when batted at, or buttons that make sounds when pushed, are fun and are wonderful learning toys for your older baby. Take a Peek One great accessory for baby while she is in the car seat is a mirror designed for rear-seated babies (those under one year and under 20 lbs.). The mirror fits in the corner of your rear window. The mirror itself can hold endless fascination for your little one, who is just now learning that the reflection she's looking at is her own. Some mirrors even come with a remote control so you can make lights blink or music play. Be sure to place the mirror in such a way that it does not obstruct your view while driving. A Little Support Car seat accessories are also made for more practical uses. If you have a very young infant, consider a head support. These attach to the back of the car seat, usually with Velcro, to keep Baby's head upright while she travels. Even older babies can benefit from a head support for those times when they feel like drifting off while on the road. Buy one made of soft, comfortable material that detaches easily and is machine-washable. You can also purchase a total body support item. Make sure it fits the car seat you have without obstructing the belt system over Baby's body. Staying Warm Another accessory that Mom will appreciate as much as Baby is a car seat bunting or "boot". These slip over the baby's bottom half without interfering with the safety belts of the car seat. Some also come up over the sides and above the head for all-around warmth. They come in all sizes, from infant to toddler. Another option is a bunting that goes over the entire seat rather than just around Baby's lower half. Use it throughout the winter to be sure Baby is warm enough on her ride, whether you're going to the store, across town or out of state. Baby car seat buntings are versatile, as they can also be used in strollers. You can even put Baby into the bunting and carry her around in your arms, keeping her warm and secure without a lot of added bulk. Whether it's a toy or a convenience item, the right car seat accessory can be a tremendous help. Ask around: What car seat accessories have worked for family and friends? Take added tips from them, and choose the products that will work for you.
