Baby Hair Clips, Bows, and Headbands

baby hair bow
Sugar and spice and everything nice: Little girls are just plain cuter in bows. You can dress your baby in style by adding an everyday or fancy accessory to her hair. Whether she has a full head of curls or just a few wisps, you can find adorable hair accessories made just for her. There are several options for drawing attention to your baby's locks:
  • Tie-on bows
  • Clip-on accessories
  • U-shaped head bands
  • Circular elasticized head bands Babies who are blessed with thick hair, or hair that is on the coarse side, can easily accommodate all four of these options. For less-endowed infants, circular elasticized bands are a popular option. These slip over the top of Baby's head; they require no hair to hold them in place. Smart Shopping Use common sense when choosing a hair accessory for your baby. Very small pieces (like glued-on rhinestones) can easily be pulled off and wind up in Baby's mouth. Avoid these until she gets older. An elasticized head band should fit snugly but not too tightly on Baby's head. A too tight band will constrict blood flow and can cause headaches. U-shaped head bands for babies should be covered in cloth. Babies are naturally curious and the band is likely to end up in your child's hands at one time or another. Plastic bands, even if the edges look blunt, can cause injury to the baby if her uncoordinated hands try to yank it down. Mix and Match The easiest way to select hair accessories is to pick them out while you're shopping for outfits. The pink you remember may not match the pink you're considering in the store, and it's impractical to bring outfits along while you shop. An adorable bow that doesn't go with any of the colors Baby has at home, or with any of the outfits you're about to purchase, is best left on the shelf. However, don't be afraid to go for the new and very trendy "mix and match" look. Stripes and polka-dots in a matching color, or a contrasting color in the same color family (violet to go with a pink or lavender outfit), can make your baby look picture-perfect. A Festive Look A holiday outfit is all the cuter when topped with a hair accessory. For Christmas, a head band with reindeer antlers or Christmas tree bells on the ends will add fun to your celebration. Be sure that all materials are cloth; anything too heavy will cause headaches and possibly even injury. For Hanukkah, a blue and gold bow tops your baby in traditional style. For Valentine's Day, a pink elasticized head band embellished with hearts is a sweet look equal to the occasion. A hair accessory can also add to your child's Halloween costume. Sew on ears to her animal costume, or add deely-boppers (covered in material) for a space-alien look. If you choose a head covering with elastic under the chin, such as a witch's hat, select a wide band that doesn't fit too tightly under the chin, and keep a watchful eye out. If your baby repeatedly yanks the hat down, pulling the elastic taut against her neck, you may want to forego the accessory or choose a different theme altogether. Have fun with your choices, and don't forget to take lots of pictures. The right hair accessory will bring out Baby's sweet look and will leave you with pretty memories for years to come.
