Dolls Can Be a Great Addition to Your Baby's Imaginative Playtime

A baby doll toy is a wonderful shower gift. With so many selections though, it's hard to know whether your choice will choose a baby as much as it pleases you. Consider the following when buying a baby doll. Gender Dolls Dolls come in all shapes, sizes and, yes, even sexes. Gone are the days when only little girls were encouraged to be nurturing. Baby experts say boys can benefit enormously from owning a small replica of them to play with and nurture. Baby boy and boy-toddler dolls are as abundant as baby girl dolls nowadays, so consider this when selecting a gift for that baby boy in your life. Soft and Sweet Younger babies will benefit most from a doll that is one piece and made of soft, but not plush material. Terry cloth is an ideal material as it is absorbent, washes easily and feels soft and huggable. Embroidered features are best as they do not pose a choking hazard. If you can't find a doll with embroidered or painted features, tug gently at any extraneous parts to be sure they can't come off easily. If you're still worried, pick up a needle and thread and reinforce them yourself. Make sure the doll is stuffed very firmly. Soft or lumpy dolls can pose suffocation hazards to very small babies. Just Like Me Doll Many toy manufacturers offer a line of dolls that can be made to match your baby's hair, eye and skin color. The Internet will provide you with a broad variety from which to choose. Although these dolls tend to be a bit more expensive, your baby will love having a doll that looks just like they do. Dressing Up Some dolls teach as well as entertain. Dolls with Velcro, ties and buttons on their clothing will fascinate your baby and will help him learn the basics of dressing as he gets older. Tug gently at all parts to make sure small parts do not come off easily and pose a safety hazard. Potty Training Doll One unique toy that's ideal for toddlers is a potty training doll. Similar to the "drink and wet" dolls you probably remember owning as a child, a potty training doll allows your child to have a buddy during the training process. Many children respond better to seeing potty training in action. This doll provides a visual tool to use during training. Action Dolls Action dolls such as soldiers or toys that come with extra pieces like tiny shoes or a doctor's stethoscope are safety hazards to toddlers and babies. Wait until he or she is at least three or four years old, and follow the manufacturer stated age for specific toys as a guide. Keepsake Doll If you're considering giving your baby the doll you had as a child, you may want to wait. Infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers can't appreciate the sentimental value of your keepsakes and you could be the one in tears when you find Dolly's arm in the toy box and her hat in tatters. Consider putting it in a display box and up on your child's shelf and presenting it to your child when he or she is older. Whether for a boy or a girl, a baby doll toy will be enjoyed by your baby for years to come.
