Making Baby Shower Invites By Hand

If you are more of a hands-on designer, you're probably familiar with the local scrapbooking supply store. You know that this is the place to go to find many of the same elements found on the Internet, but with a much greater variety of real-world textures and materials.

Sometimes, it's best to start simple. Consider beginning with blank cards, adding glued-on embellishments and filling in the text in your own handwriting with a calligraphy pen. Or, you can look for pre-printed templates that feature a baby-oriented theme, such as baby animals, smiling flowers, or glittering rainbows. Working from the template, you can add decorations and text just as you would a scrapbook page.

You have great flexibility in paper choices when making invitations by hand. Recycled paper is an inexpensive, eco-friendly option and comes in many colors. The natural, torn look of some recycled paper is currently quite fashionable. You can buy 100% recycled or for added strength, a cotton-recycled blend, or 100% cotton paper. Linen paper adds an elegant feel, but is more expensive and formal. Textured papers are interesting, from those with a glossy finish to woven textures to flower-embedded papers, and Italian or Japanese handmade papers can add a delicate and subtle elegance to your project.

Additional craft-type ideas for hand-made invitations include:
  • Using a blank card template, cut into fun shapes that match your theme, such as stars or teddy bears.
  • Creating textured edges on your cards with craft scissors.
  • Gluing on items such as tiny bows, dried flowers, or lace with ribbon or raffia.
  • Creating pictures and designs with rubber stamps and stickers that match your theme.
  • For an elegant touch, add an overlay of translucent vellum paper.
When writing your invitations, be sure to include these important details:
  • Date and time of the shower
  • Location
  • Name of the guest of honor
  • Party theme
  • RSVP request
Do not forget envelopes to match the paper and invitations. Order enough paper and envelopes to make extra invitations should the need arise.
