There are many ways to make a birth announcement so that a big brother feels involved and special in the process.
If he's old enough and responsible, let the big brother hold his new brother or sister while you capture pictures of the two of them together. Not only will these photos make great keepsakes for the scrapbook or album, but you can print them out and work with him in making a big-brother birth-announcement poster.
If the older brother is school age, this would be a great "show & tell" piece. You could hang the poster on the door of your house as a welcome to all who come to visit. What a great alternative to a door hanger! When you are finished using the poster, let big brother hang it on a wall in his room to remember their first bonding moments.
Make t-shirts with details of the impending birth with the older brother of the household. These unique birth announcements are not only creative but are also useful. Make more than one in different colors, and big brother will have a new set of shirts to wear to announce the arrival of his new sibling. Let him take part in creating these before the baby is born, then add the baby's details afterward. Get elaborate by adding the baby's footprint or by putting both the baby's and his big brother's footprints side-by-side. When finished, the shirts can be worn just about anywhere to share the good news. When big brother outgrows the t-shirts, you can turn them into memory pillows.
Use your computer, or have a custom-made announcement. These announcements can have cute and inclusive wording that lets the older brother announce the baby's arrival to the world. Try wording such as:
- Having one boy was so wonderful, we decided to have another. Big brother (insert name) would like to announce the birth of his brother (insert name).
- Meet my new playmate and lifetime friend.
- Having one was so much fun, we thought we'd have another one.
- Nothing compares to this friend I've found.
- I'm feeling proud and special to be able to tell you about my new sister.
