When it's your turn to host a baby shower, this is a great time to show off your baking skills. No baking skills? Not to worry! You can still make a lovely baby shower cake without having any baby cake decorating experience. Once the frosting is applied, just reach for a handful of classic baby items, like pacifiers, small rattles, and bows. Or, make a quick trip to your local crafts supply store to pick up dollhouse-sized baby items ranging from diapers to baby cribs.
Here is a recipe for a traditional two-tiered round cake, with simple decorating items for creating the perfect baby theme. In addition to an oven, two mixing bowls, a spoon, and a knife, you will need the following to make a two-tiered baby shower cake:
White, ready-made frosting; three cans.
White cake mix; one box.
Eggs.
Water.
Vegetable Oil.
Food Coloring Dye; red and blue.
Comb: brand new, with widely spaced, straight teeth.
Small baby items, like pacifiers, figurines, or dollhouse miniatures.
Curling ribbon and flowers for decoration.
Directions
- Mix the white cake batter according to directions on the box.
- In two bowls, place even amounts of white cake batter.
- Add four drops of red dye into the white cake batter in one bowl and stir until it is completely mixed. This will produce pink cake batter.
- Add four drops of blue dye into the other bowl of white cake batter. Stir until it is completely mixed. This will produce blue cake batter.
- Pour the pink cake batter into one round 8" pan, and then pour the blue cake batter into another 8" cake pan. Bake the two pans in the same oven at the same time, according to directions on the box.
- Remove cakes from the oven when done.
- Cool the cakes in their pans, then gently tap the bottom of the pans to remove the cakes from the pans and put them side-by-side on a cellophane-covered cookie sheet. Next, place your cakes in the freezer. A quick freeze will allow you to brush off any crumbs that would otherwise get into the frosting. It will also keep the cakes fresh, and they will thaw before you serve.
- After one hour, remove the cakes from the freezer.
- Lightly brush off the layers. Place one layer of the cake on a serving plate.
- Open a can of frosting and cover the bottom layer of the cake with what will be the frosting in the middle of a two-tier cake.
- Place the second layer on top of the now frosted first layer and very gently push down to disperse the frosting in the middle of the cake.
- Frost the sides of the cake with gentle, even strokes. Cover the cake, but do not worry about making the frosting look smooth. Frost the top of the cake last.
- After the cake is completely covered in frosting, get the comb.
- Lightly scrape the comb around the side of the entire cake. There will be ridges in the frosting, but it should also result in a uniform, decorative look.
- Use the comb on the top of the cake in opposite directions to achieve a basket weave look, or slowly turn the cake and make a spiral design.
- Decorate around the edges of the cake plate with pacifiers, curled ribbon, and flowers. A colorful rattle with curled ribbon tied to the handle and a sprinkling of safety pins will top the cake.
And vóila! You've created a beautiful cake for your baby shower. This is, of course, only one of many possibilities. If you want a unique, homemade baby shower cake, there are wonderful options that will all leave a sweet taste in your mouth.
