Incorporating Arts and Crafts Into Baby's Nursery

Creating a special space for your newborn can be exciting. However, with so many choices in furniture and accessories, it is easy to go over budget. Using your own creativity, you can design a nursery that will be just the right place for your baby's sweet dreams. Before unleashing the credit cards, consider some of these baby nursery crafts.

Adorn a wall in your baby's nursery with homemade decorative accents. Craft ideas include:
  • A shadowbox that displays precious baby photos and keepsakes such as the baby's birth announcement, newborn footprints and booties.
  • A painted picture frame for one of baby's first pictures. Painted in one of your accent nursery colors, and personalized with wood cutouts that can be purchased at a craft store and then painted and glued onto the frame. A banner cutout can also be used and the baby's name and date of birth can be added later.
  • A stencil of your favorite children's verse.
  • Create a footprint growth chart.
  • Using an overhead projector and a picture from a children's book, trace the projected image onto the wall and paint it to create an inexpensive mural.
  • A needlepoint or cross-stitch wall hanging of a nursery picture.
For furniture that matches your nursery's theme or color scheme, incorporate these craft ideas into your decor.
  • Change the hardware on a dresser to transform it from plain to fun.
  • Create your own stamps by cutting out shapes from sponges. Use the stamps to decorate a rocking chair or other furniture and to tie together a common theme.
  • Using stencils, or by drawing free-hand image, paint designs on wood furniture.
  • If you wallpapered the room, use left over wallpaper on the back wall of shelves.
  • Select plain, comfortable cushions for your rocker. Use stencils to embellish the cushions.
Window treatments in a nursery can be a challenge. It is best to avoid mini blinds because of cord hazards, and roll down shades can be very dull looking. To create a fresh, new look for your baby's nursery using craft techniques consider these ideas:
  • Use a stencil and paint, to place a creative design on a plain roll down shade. You can create a repetitive pattern or create a larger design; creating an entire barnyard or celestial scene. NOTE: If you are creating a celestial scene, pinprick holes into the stars to create a twinkling effect when light filters through.
  • Make your own roll down shades. Pick up a kit at a craft store, and choose your own fabric.
Closet organizers can be expensive, and the plastic they are made out of is not always desirable. As an alternative, consider mounting wooden crates in the nursery's closet. These can be purchased at a local home improvement store. Sand them lightly to remove any splinters and paint them if desired. When mounting the crates to the wall, leave space between them so that the top of each crate can also be used as a storage space. Books, magazines and online searches will reveal many craft ideas that you can incorporate into your baby's nursery. Consider your skills, interests and time, and then have fun adding special craft touches to your baby's room.
