Baby Nursery Checklist

Making Sure Your Baby's Room Has Everything It Needs

Planning your baby's nursery can be overwhelming. You can eliminate the stress by making a baby nursery checklist and marking off items as you buy or receive them.

Begin by listing your essential items. These will probably include the following:
  • Crib
  • Crib Mattress
  • Dresser
  • Bedding: comforter, bumper, fitted sheets (at least six), waterproof mattress pad, and receiving blankets.
  • Lamp
  • Changing table
Decide upon a theme for your baby's nursery. Locate furniture to match. Your theme doesn't have to be anything fancy. A color scheme can be a beginning point for decorating your baby's nursery.

The following items probably aren't necessities, but many parents choose to include them in their checklist. They make everyone's life more cozy and/or safe.
  • Rocking chair or glider
  • Bassinet
  • Portable playpen
  • Nightlight
  • Diaper holder
  • Book shelf
  • Bouncy seat
  • Outlet plugs
  • Monitor: audio and visual
  • Wall hangings and pictures
  • Shelving
  • Mobile
  • Busy Box or Activity Box
  • Crib mirror
  • Nursery decorations: wall border, blinds, curtains
Once you have your nursery checklist completed, you will find it does double-duty as a baby shower registry. If you are opening your own baby shower registry, take your list along with you and make sure any items you haven't already purchased are on it.

If you are not expecting a baby shower, let close friends and family members have a peek at your checklist. Even without a shower, your loved ones will undoubtedly want to buy a present or two for your new baby.

If you plan on buying all or some of the items on your checklist yourself, tackle the big items first. Be a smart shopper and shop the sales for the best price.

Be sure to keep safety in mind when purchasing items for your baby's nursery. Buying a second-hand crib from a stranger might seem like a great idea, but does the crib meet current safety standards and does it work as well as when it was new?

Some items are fine when purchased second-hand or via Internet auctions. These include wall hangings, throw rugs, pictures and lamps.

Your nursery checklist will keep you organized. Before you know it, every item will be taken care of and you'll be all set for your baby to arrive.
