Give Your Nursery a Sense of Whimsy with a Fairy Theme

A fairy themed nursery can be just right for daydreaming. When conjuring up ideas, also think about what type of decorating elements and tools can carry out these ideas. Will you want to use pre-pasted borders or murals? Would you like to create your own mural with stencils or an overhead projector? Will you use wall stickers, or beautiful framed prints and tapestries with fairy themes to decorate the walls of your baby's nursery? For more ideas, please read Decorating Baby Nursery. Fairy theme ideas include:
  • Woodland sprites: these fairies are found in cool, serene places near water; their element. You will also find pictures of woodland sprites with flutes and harps because in fairy lore, the woodland sprites are muses and among the most creative of fairies.
  • Fairy Princess.
  • Storybook fairies: the nice ones that symbolize goodness and hope, such as Pinocchio's Blue Fairy and Peter Pan's Tinkerbell.
  • Vintage fairies: depicted on greeting cards from the 1930's and 1940's. Ways to bring fairies into the nursery include the following.
  • Transform the nursery into a soft, green fairy glen with cushion toadstools. Create a mural of an oak tree with moss and flowers underneath. Maybe add to the mural with a painting of a bubbling brook or a serene lake with lilies and fireflies sparkling with glitter or lights.
  • Decorate silk flowers with matching miniature fairies for a flower fairy theme.
  • Add an element of surprise and peek-a-boo fun to a forest scene, have some of the fairies peeking out from behind trees. Storybook fairies can bring inspiration into the nursery. For example, if you are using Tinkerbell, stencil a verse or two from the song, "You Can Fly"; reminding all to "think of the happiest things?". You could carry this further; with pictures of the "happiest things", you want to share with your baby. Another song that could provide inspirational verse is the song that Cinderella's fairy godmother sings, "Impossible! It's Possible!" Include elements from fairy lore in your art and furnishing. Tulip blooms are often beds for fairy babies and oak or apple trees are favorite homes for fairies. Other fairy themed decorating elements that can be found online include:
  • A table water fountain decorated with woodland sprites, featuring soft lighting.
  • Tapestries depicting flower and woodland fairies.
  • A display shelf for fairy figurines or dolls.
  • Fairy lights; the smallest of decorative lights, for stringing on a plant or intertwined with ivy over a window.
  • A glowing fairy lamp.
  • Gossamer wing like curtains made of a sheer fabric. Work with a color scheme so the nursery does not get too busy. Remember it will not be long before baby starts exploring. As always, be sure to consider your baby's safety when you are decorating. Finally, a bit of fairy lore, you might want to share through embroidery or stenciling: "House fairies such as pixies like to visit places free of clutter, where tempers are held, and children and animals are treated kindly." Happy imagining!
